Things only become more complicated beyond text. Your website design software may allow you to change text and move graphics and images around on the page, but it will not allow you to modify the content of the graphics or images. In most cases templates have graphical headers or graphics over images and logos that will contain similar placeholder text. This kind of "text" cannot be edited via Notepad or any other web design software because it is actually an image. Virtually every template package available today will come with large, editable graphic files in a format called "PSD." These are "PhotoShop Documents", and may only be fully edited by the industry standard Adobe Photoshop program. PhotoShop is the 500 pound gorilla of graphic design, it can do just about anything with the humble pixel. This kind of power comes with a high price tag, though. Coming in around $500-$600 street price, that's just the first investment Photoshop requires. The second is the time and effort to learn the effective use of the program. Opening a template's PSD file will likely result in a cascade of "layers" and "slices" even an experienced Photoshop hand would take time to digest.
It is not necessary to have a lot f software to use design templates. You will need a text editor to modify the template. Anything from Notepad found on Windows computers to Adobe Dreamweaver will work. Notepad is very simple and offers no help in understanding design. Dreamweaver is a top shelf WYSIWYG editor. Dreamweaver will aid in modifying the template with very little skill required. It is very expensive, however. You may want an image program to edit images. You will need an FTP program to upload the finished pages and images to your server. That is about all you will need.
If you try to contact the template website you bought the template from, you will find many of them not able to help you with your required template customization. As you might notice, there are hundreds of web sites offering exactly the same set of web templates -- as they are just affiliate websites reselling websites templates and flash templates from a third party template provider. Therefore many template websites are just interested in selling more templates rather than doing any customization work, or might just redirect you to an expensive template update service so that they can collection commissions by referring you. They are mostly just 'Internet marketers', rather than web developers.
Website templates are basically ready-made web pages that you can download from a template design company. The HTML code is ready to go - all you have to do is choose a template that suits your business and customer base, download it and then edit according to your specifications. Most companies showcase all the available designs on their site for you to preview before downloading, so you'll know exactly what you are buying beforehand.
Due to the programming of Joomla, creating a template to control the styling and layout of your template can be something that may become necessary as you progress along the journey of your own Joomla site, this is the moment before frustration begins. As controlling the many factors of a Joomla template in no easy feat at first, a Joomla template consists of an xml file containing the installation instructions. A CSS styling sheet to handle the styling of all the objects, divs, forms etc. and finally the index.php file.
