Similar to PSD files and Photoshop, templates that advertise Flash elements also require their own editor. It is beyond the scope of this article to discuss the wisdom of using Flash in the first place, but as a general rule of thumb, keep Flash use to minimum. Unless the template is for a complete Flash site, it will likely contain a "non-Flash" version of the template. Generally Flash is used for navigation and headers in templates, so if don't wish to use the Flash elements, check to see if there is a "non-Flash" version that uses gif/jpeg graphics instead. Otherwise a Flash editor will be required as well as some more time and effort to learn the editor and Flash. Ironically, templates can be a useful learning tool for Flash, since seeing how they are laid out and scripted can provide an understanding of how the animations work.
No problem! Almost all website template providers offer an option of copyrighted to non-copyrighted templates. The major different between a copyrighted and a non copyrighted template is the fact that copyrighted templates are sold only once and the purchaser of the copyrighted template gets all user rights over it whereas in a non copyrighted template the rights of usage stays with the template ownership company and can be sold again and again. So in case you need to create a copyrighted website that is unique be sure to go for copyrighted website templates.
The wise old saying tells us to avoid Inventing the wheel every day. It is much faster and more efficient to build a website out of previously constructed blocks. Web design templates give us a framework to build on. Web designers often keep a few different templates to use as the basis of their work. When they need to build a one column site or a site with a left sidebar they have a template on hand. They may follow this rule regularly unless they receive an order for a custom designed website. After you have chosen a template you can make your minor changes in a hurry through the style sheet. This allows the designer to offer an effective design to a customer at a lower price. This gives the business person with a reasonable level of skill the chance to make a site without the lengthy and complicated process of design from scratch.
If you try to contact the template website you bought the template from, you will find many of them not able to help you with your required template customization. As you might notice, there are hundreds of web sites offering exactly the same set of web templates -- as they are just affiliate websites reselling websites templates and flash templates from a third party template provider. Therefore many template websites are just interested in selling more templates rather than doing any customization work, or might just redirect you to an expensive template update service so that they can collection commissions by referring you. They are mostly just 'Internet marketers', rather than web developers.
A final note on templates in general. Those willing to buy the software, take the time to learn it, and use a template should be aware that many templates are not "well coded." For the most part this may not effect or even matter to the template buyer. They will have a website and it will "work". Anyone who is also attempting to optimize their site for search engine placement, or who wants to make their site more efficient and use less code, should pay attention to the structure of the HTML files provided in the template. Many, though by no means all, templates, use a "tables" based layout that could be improved upon to make it more code efficient and make search engine optimization easier.
Consider goals and objectives- A specific goal or objective should be the driving force behind getting the right template. If you don't know what to expect from customers, or worse yet, what to deliver to them, then this is a clear example of misplaced priorities that may result in a failure. Anyone building a website should always remain focused on what is being sought, and not just what they think should be done.
